Biography
Overview
Born in Inverness, where I live with my wife, Linda, I've been involved in politics for much of my life. I've been a councillor, an MP in the House of Commons, and since 2007, an MSP in the Scottish Parliament. I'm a former assistant director for the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations.
What motivated you to become an MSP?
As a young social worker, I saw the effects of poverty and deprivation firsthand. Issues like alcoholism and drug abuse were a big part of my day-to-day casework. Having always been interested in politics and thinking about the bigger picture, I wanted to do something to try and effect change.
When I moved to Edinburgh in the 1980s, I joined the Labour Party and became active from day one. I became a councillor when I moved to Dumfries, and so began a career where I've always been motivated to help society.
