Biography
Overview
Before becoming an MSP in 2011, I had a 30-year career in sports journalism. That career began in my home city of Aberdeen in 1980, before I moved to Dundee in 1985. Since 1990, I've lived in Carnoustie with my wife and family, a town that sits within my Angus South constituency.
What motivated you to become an MSP?
My passion for politics started from a very young age. It took me until 1998 to actually join the SNP, around the time of the devolution referendum.
Running election campaigns, becoming an MSP and then a Scottish Government minister was quite unexpected. My passion for providing effective, practical and political representation for the people of Angus South has acted as a driver throughout. There's nothing more satisfying about this job than securing the right outcome for a constituent who's turned to my office for help!
