Freedom of Information (FOI): at a glance

FOI gives you a right to receive information

FOI applies to public authorities

The FOI right covers recorded information

Your request must be in writing (letter or email)

Public authorities must help you - it's their duty

If you want environmental information different rules apply

Authorities must respond within 20 working days

Information is usually provided free of charge

Information can only be withheld if the law allows it
