Training for excellence

15 June 2016

The First Minister and Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, hosted a summit on raising attainment in Scotland’s schools, where they outlined plans to build on existing qualifications by providing additional training for both new and experienced headteachers.

Craigroyston Community High School pupils, James Hay and Ewa Jacon, report:

“The summit was attended by politicians, teachers, specialists, many representatives of the education sector, and young people from across Scotland. We met the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, and Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, with staff and other pupils.

“As the school’s head boy and girl, Ewa and I had the opportunity to speak to the attendees, sharing our aspirations and experiences, and report the day’s proceedings and events. This summit was extremely important, not just for our school and its growing reputation, but for all schools across Scotland, and the aspiring young adults within them.

Ewa added:
“Being involved in the education summit was a fantastic experience – giving the students a voice when it comes to debating policy is crucial, as we are the ones most affected by it.

“I really enjoyed speaking at today’s summit – it was an unexpected, but rewarding opportunity, giving me the chance to share my experiences and explain how the support of my teachers helped me on my path to further education.”
