31 January 2019

The First Minister’s National Advisory Council on Women and Girls (NACWG) has published its first report.

The report sets out 11 ambitious recommendations to tackle gender inequality in Scotland – ranging from action on education to proposals around candidate quotas.

Throughout 2018 our priority task has been to listen. We are delighted to publish our First Report, which highlights what we have learned and how we plan to make gender inequality a historical curiosity.

The First Minister set out the Scottish Government’s initial response to the report at the NACWG’s Circle Event in Edinburgh.

She said:

“Each of us – women and men, individually and collectively – have a responsibility to meet the challenge of tackling gender inequalities.

So in setting me a challenge which I absolutely undertake with real enthusiasm, I think it’s important that we set each other a challenge – representatives from across our society, from business, education, the public and third sectors.”

FM @NicolaSturgeon will meet the National Advisory Council on Women and Girls and circle members this morning to discuss the @NACWGScot's first report on tackling gender inequality in Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿#genderequal

In her speech to the NACWG and circle members the First Minister committed to providing a full update to the group in due course.

Audience members asked her a number of questions around engaging with young and minority groups, and how to encourage more organisations to understand the benefits of gender quotas.

On top of hearing the @ScotGovFM's response at yesterday's event, we also premiered a film about our First Report and the progress made by all in 2018.
