First Minister Nicola Sturgeon joined hundreds of people at Edinburgh Castle to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War’s Gallipoli campaign.

The First Minister laid a wreath at a special service held within the Scottish National War Memorial.

The First Minister said:

Today’s Service of Remembrance reminded us of the terrible impact the campaign had on all the nations involved.”

The Gallipoli campaign resulted in over 200,000 allied casualties.

After the service, the First Minister met with Ian Domingo – a third generation Kings Own Scottish Borderer. Ian’s Grandfather fought and died in Gallipoli.

Ian told the First Minister how he first found out about his grandfather when he was waiting on his bride to be in St Mary’s Church in Hawick.  His grandfather’s name is inscribed on the alter commemoration!
