That the Parliament congratulates the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which, on 16 November 2020, celebrated 75 years since being founded in London; notes that the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere designation is part of a remarkable national and global network that brings in £151 million of financial benefit to local UK economies each year, and builds bridges between people, culture and nature around the world; acknowledges that The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere is part of this extraordinary global movement working towards a long and meaningful peace; considers that biosphere teams have been instrumental in working with local businesses, communities and land managers to raise awareness and encourage action to address sustainability issues that are now being actively highlighted as part of the response to the post-COVID-19 Green Recovery, resulting in over 340 businesses, communities, individuals and local organisations signing up to the biosphere sustainability ethos as “Proud Supporters”; acknowledges that 25 businesses are going through UNESCO’s Biosphere Certification Scheme, which audits the sustainability credentials of key goods and services that it delivers; notes what it considers significant new funding support from the South of Scotland Enterprise agency, alongside existing support from local authority partners, and welcomes the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere in its drive to put sustainability at the heart of everything that is done by “Acting Local”, which it considers the perfect foundations for establishing Scotland's next National Park in Galloway.

That the Parliament supports the Marine Conservation Society’s campaign to keep Scotland’s beaches clean; notes its Great British Beach Clean campaign, which runs from 18 to 25 September 2020; understands that people are being encouraged to clean their own local beaches in smaller groups in line with COVID-19 regulations, which contributes to the Marine Conservation Society’s efforts to record and map the volume of rubbish that is being cleared from beaches; considers this voluntary work to be of immense importance to the natural environment, with 30% of all rubbish on the coastline directly attributed to the public, as well as inadvertent pollution from non-domestic sewage; urges as many of the public as possible to volunteer in the Great British Beach Clean, and thanks the Marine Conservation Society for the important work that it does.
