The Hebridean Dark Skies Festival is an ambitious annual programme of events led by An Lanntair, including live music, film, visual art, theatre, astronomy talks, and stargazing. This year’s festival runs from Friday 5 February to Thursday 18 February.
Following the tightening of Covid 19 lockdown rules at the beginning of January 2021, this year’s festival is now taking place online. Our online programme includes talks, workshops, podcasts, and music – both pre-recorded and live.

Our opening and closing live events – Kathryn Joseph and Lumen, and Stillness by Renzo Spiteri – have been postponed. Our film programme and Highland Astronomy events at Scaladale and Grinneabhat have sadly had to be cancelled, but we hope to build these events into next year’s programme instead and in the meantime have added new events to replace them, including a live broadcast by artist Louise Beer and a new piece of music by Renzo Spiteri. Our two exhibitions, by astronomy-inspired artist collective Lumen and the winners of our Dark Skies Photography Competition, will open as soon as An Lanntair reopens to the public.
The Hebridean Dark Skies Festival is part-financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community Outer Hebrides Leader 2014-2020 programme, as well as new funding from Caledonian MacBrayne.
