Between 1563 and 1736, the years when the Witchcraft Act 1563 was law, there were 4 periods of “satanic panic” which resulted in approximately 4000 people being accused as witches. Of those 4000, academics estimate that approximately 2500 were executed.

To bring these people some justice and to memorialise their memory appropriately, we are calling for—

  • A pardon for those convicted,
  • An apology for all those accused and
  • A national monument

Do you agree?

A long overdue campaign to address an overwhelming quantity of miscarriages of justice.

I am wholeheartedly in favour of the aims of this petition. The suffering of these women and men needs to be recognised with a national response.

For those 2,500 women and men who were executed by the state, and their bodies burned to erase all trace that they ever existed. We now give them their place in history, and remember their names and their lives.

I am in the friends of Burdiehouse burn valley park and we would really like to have a memorial to the local women who were accused of witchcraft and tortured or murdered. We started researching court records before the pandemic and will do more when we can. This is important work to bring justice to many women and their memories. Thank you

I fully support the request for a pardon, apology and and prominent national memorial for the witches of scotland.

So much wisdom and knowledge lost, taken from communities and demonised, all for power and because of fear and indoctrination by the Christians leaders. I feel to honour these woman and men is the very least we can do. Just as the Jews became honoured and debased history is not erased, but learned from so we dont repeat it.

Powerful women are not WITCHES.

This is extremely important.

A pardon and an apology is well overdue for these forgotten victims of Kirk and state repression and control of the day. A national monument would be a fitting memorial! (perhaps in Spott, East Lothian, adjacent to the "Witches Stane")

This doesn't erase the victimization of those executed. This does allow allow their descendants to have honor returned in their name.
