This ceremonial stone circle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Heart of Neolithic Orkney site. Watson made a number of photographs, each of which featured an individual, monumental stone. He made the images around the time of the summer solstice.
Watson is well-known for his fashion, art, portraiture and magazine cover work.
The photograph was displayed as part of Watson’s Frozen exhibition at the City Art Centre in Edinburgh (2006), his first retrospective in Scotland, and gifted by the photographer to the collection.
Artist biography
Albert Watson OBE was born in Edinburgh in 1924 and now lives and works in the United States of America. Watson studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and the Royal College of Art, London. After moving to the United States in the 1970s, he gained a reputation as a fashion photographer working for magazines such as Vogue, The Face, Rolling Stone and Newsweek. He won a Grammy Award in 1975 for best LP cover design.
Renowned for his striking portraiture, his land- and cityscape photography is similarly bold and dramatic in approach.
