The Chanukiah (or Menorah) is a candelabrum. It is lit during Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. The festival takes place in November or December each year.
The candles mark the Hanukkah miracle of one container of oil burning for eight days. Over eight days, the candles are lit from right to left using the Shamash (central) candle.
The Chanukiah is made of oak and sycamore wood. The designer and maker chose these woods as they are also used in the Parliament building.
Members of the Jewish community in Scotland gifted the Chanukiah. It was donated by the family of Dr. J. Rifkind.
