2-3pm, Saturday 12 March
In light of the John Bellany and the Scottish Women’s Hospitals exhibition currently exhibiting at the Scottish Parliament, Keith Hartley, the Deputy Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and co-author of the definitive book on John Bellany, will give an illuminating talk about the late artist and his work.
John Bellany helped change the course of painting in Scotland. From his early artistic efforts inspired by his birthplace and the fishing communities of Port Seton and Eyemouth through to his interest in Realism and Expressionism and the Old Masters, to the influence of Calvinism and the issues of original sin, sex, guilt and death and the later landscapes generated by his travels to Barga in Italy, John Bellany’s work made him one of the most acclaimed Scottish artists of his generation.
