Peatlands form where primary plant productivity exceeds decomposition, and therefore where partially decomposed organic matter - peat – accumulates. Peatlands cover approximately 3.5 M km2 in boreal and subarctic regions, an area equivalent to 3% of the Earth’s land mass. These northern peatlands have functioned as a carbon sink throughout the Holocene and are estimated to store nearly a third of the world’s soil carbon pool, a lot of which is derived from the moss genus Sphagnum. Sphagnum peatlands are therefore disproportionately important for global biogeochemical cycles and climate regulation. In addition, they harbour highly specialised biodiversity and play essential roles in the regulation of regional hydrology.

In this lecture Prof John Howe will outline some of his research surveying the ocean floor. From mapping and drilling the seabed around Antarctica to modern surveys using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The need for better maps of our ocean floor has become essential as we aim to both understand and sustainably manage our oceans (Wolfl et al., 2019).

Located 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall out into the Atlantic Ocean, the Isles of Scilly archipelago is literally on The Edge, marking the most southerly point in the United Kingdom. Five of the islands are inhabited with a resident population of 2,500 while annual visitor numbers reach over 100,000. This beautiful but remote location means that Scilly is also on The Edge economically and socially, facing real challenges in terms of its future as a sustainable community.

Between the two world wars, a need for the protection of that natural resource - fisheries - on which the wellbeing of islanders on the Edge had always depended was still never more pressing. The concept of being 'on the edge' was exacerbated by the apparent neglect of a remote government and bureaucracy. In 1933 Compton Mackenzie, then living 'in exile' Barra, founded 'The Sea League' or Comunn Iasgairean na Mara to lobby for the closing of the Minch to trawlers and the increase of fines for illegal trawling, and thus to rebuild local inshore fisheries with drift-nets and 'long lines'.

What was the Highlands like in the century before Culloden? My lecture will provide a new perspective, drawing on autobiographical sources relating to a traveller, scholar and minister from Kirkhill, by the shores of the Beauly Firth. I will seek to outline how this individual, Rev. James Fraser, or, at least, aspects of his self-presentation, might encourage a new way of looking at the Highlands and Islands today.
