Welcome to this blended learning page for DCTs designed around the topic of Research and Publication, intended to provide an insight into how to approach early career research in dentistry and outline the potential journey towards your first publication.

Here you will find learning outcomes as well as instructions and resources enabling you complete the recommended topic familiarisation prior to the live interactive session.

Aims and learning outcomes

Aims

This blended learning aims to develop the knowledge of the dental core trainee regarding research principles and to signpost trainees towards research opportunities.

The live session event will provide the trainee with a basic introduction to research and common pitfalls encountered in completing research. 

There will be three presenters, all of whom have been involved in research at trainee level. These presentations will focus on research principles, identifying and maximising opportunities to be involved in research and different ways of disseminating research.

Alice Hamilton Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Specialty Trainee in Restorative Dentistry

Alice started her interest in research whilst completing an Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences (Molecular Biology) prior to studying dentistry at the University of Aberdeen. During her BDS she helped set up a supervised toothbrushing research project in Tanzania. Following vocational training, Alice completed three years of DCT where she developed her research skills leading to three publications. She has recently been appointed to Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Speciality Trainee in Restorative Dentistry in Dundee where she will be working on the SCRiPT and PIP clinical trials. Other research she is currently working on is a national survey-based research project assessing perceived effective and ineffective vocabulary used by the paediatric dentistry team.

Reem Ahmed ST1 Restorative Dentistry

Reem is a speciality Registrar in restorative dentistry. Her interest in research began during her Maxillofacial DCT1 year during which she worked on a case of a novel endoscopically aided removal of ectopic wisdom teeth. She has gone on to present her findings nationally, as well as publishing on the topic. She has published literature reviews on a range of topics, and presented both nationally and internationally.

Aoife Keogh DCT3 Restorative Dentistry

Aoife developed her research interest in nutrition as an undergraduate and has subsequently published her research on the utilisation of nutritive sugar substitutes by health food bloggers with the British Dental Journal which she has also presented at international level. Her current research projects include a cohort study comparing Botox A and Botox B for patients with sialorrhea.  She has presented on a variety of topics at regional, national and international level.  Nutritional Analysis of Health Food Bloggers (2019) and Cohort Study Botox A Vs Botox B for Sialorrhoea (in press).
