Welcome to this blended learning page for dental core trainees at level1 (DCT1) designed around the topic of endodontology. The Root of the Problem event is intended to provide an insight into evaluation of endodontic treatment and approaches to patient management.

Aim

The aim of the study day is to help trainees evaluate previous endodontic treatment and treatment plan appropriately when further management is indicated.

Learning outcomes

To understand how to evaluate root canal treatment based on clinical and radiographic examination

To discuss helpful tips for carrying out root canal treatment

To discuss cases where apical surgery may be indicated

To discuss the techniques of modern microsurgery

To compare the outcomes of root canal treatment and apical surgery

Trainer Introduction

Marialena Cresta, Specialist in Endodontics

Marialena was born and was brought up in Greece. She moved to Scotland in 2008 to study dentistry at Dundee University. She gained experience in general practice prior to working as a core trainee in a variety of specialities which include Restorative, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric and Oral Surgery. During this period, she obtained the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. 

Marialena completed a three-year speciality training programme in Endodontology based in Edinburgh Dental Institute in May 2021. She successfully passed the Membership exit examination and is a registered specialist in Endodontics. Her interest is on dental trauma based on which she completed the Masters in Medical Science by Research with distinction. 

Through the past years, she has enjoyed sharing her experience through presentations and seminars. She has been certified with the Advanced Certificate in Clinical Education and the Clinical Educator Programme Level III. 

She works in private practice in Edinburgh.
