Periodontal management

Welcome to this blended learning page designed around the topic of periodontal disease, intended to provide an exploration of strategies for disease and patient management.

Here you will find the learning outcomes as well as instructions and linked resources enabling you complete the recommended topic familiarisation prior to the live interactive session. This blended course will comprise; pre-reading resources, group work based tasks and a live interactive session. Please note the live session will include presentation by DCTs of each group's results from work completed in advance.

Aims and learning outcomes

Aim

This course aims to develop the DCT's knowledge and skills in diagnosing and managing patients presenting with periodontal disease.

The course will provide essential information on the current Classification of Periodontal Disease to help to reach a diagnosis and treatment plan in clinical practice

The course will explore how appropriate treatment options can benefit the patient. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the blended learning course a participant should be able to : 

  • Discuss the process of diagnosing periodontal disease and why an early and through assessment can benefit the patient.
  • Be able to apply the Classification of Periodontal Disease to individual patients and treatment plan them in an appropriate manner.
  • Ensure that the patient has a role in disease control and how to motivate patients
  • Identify sources of support and information to ensure you and the wider dental team keep your knowledge and skills around the classification of periodontal disease up to date.

 

Trainer introduction

Madeleine Murray BDS (Glasg 1984) Msc MPhil FDS (Rest.Dent) RCPS MRD RCS Eng

Dr Madeleine Murray is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry.

Dr Murray graduated from Glasgow University in 1984 and is a registered specialist in restorative dentistry whose practice is limited to periodontics. She is an examiner for the Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Glasgow University, based at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School.  

With over 20 years experience, Dr Murray has worked primarily as a specialist accepting referrals in mixed specialist practice. She has extensive experience in clinical management of patients with complex restorative and periodontal needs, including those having dental implants. In addition, she currently teaches undergraduate students in Periodontics and regularly lectures to General Dental Practitioners and Dental Core Trainees on clinical aspects of periodontal management. She is an External examiner for the Masters in Dental Primary Care at Birmingham University.

Group work

Create a 5 minute (maximum) presentation to be delivered by a spokesperson for each group at the live session. Group presentations will be followed by a short discussion per case in the live event, where all can contribute.

  • Find your group.  Groups have been allocated by NES's Education Core Training Adviser.
  • Meet in your small groups with zoom, teams, phone etc to produce a report answering the questions set in the relevant groupwork task.
  • Use the main case resources held in the Teams channel Periodontal management and the resource reading for each task outlined with links below. 
  • As an individual, please read the material for all cases prior to our live session. It will greatly increase your participation in discussions on the day and aid your achievement of the learning outcomes.
