Welcome to this blended learning page designed around the topic of dental implantology and intended to provide an exploration of assessment and treatment in beginner and advanced cases for DCTs.

Here you will find the learning outcomes as well as instructions and resources enabling you complete the recommended topic familiarisation prior to the live interactive session.

Aims and learning outcomes

Aims

This blended learning aims to provide the Dental Core Trainee (DCT) with an overview of the complexities of planning surgical implant provision for patients.

The course will demonstrate to DCTs ways to critically review the evidence surrounding surgical implantology.

It will explore how current advances in surgical implant placement will enable the most appropriate treatment plan to be decided upon for a patient.

This blended experience will comprise; pre-reading resources, case discussions and a live interactive session.

By the end of this course a participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the challenges surrounding implant provision and how good initial planning is key to the process
  • Identify sources of information about surgical implantology to ensure, as a clinician, you are up to date.

Eleni Besi, Consultant in Oral Surgery

Eleni graduated with DDS from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2010. She completed her foundation training (Orthodontics and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) in 2011 at East Sussex and Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. After completing training, she was appointed as a speciality dentist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the same trust 2011-2015.

During 2011-2015 she completed an MSc in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and a PGCert in Implantology at Eastman Dental Institute, UCL.

In 2015 she gained her speciality training post in Oral Surgery at Edinburgh Dental Institute, (2015-2018). Since March 2019 she was appointed as a Consultant Oral Surgeon/ Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the same institute.

Eleni enjoys teaching and training all aspect of oral surgery to postgraduate trainees at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. She is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and she is currently working towards the completion of her Doctoral degree in stem cell research.

Nicola Cross, Consultant in Oral Surgery

Nicola graduated from the University of Dundee in 2004 with a passion for Oral Surgery and has spent most of her career practising solely in this field with posts including Senior House Officer, Specialty Dentist in Oral Surgery and Associate in practice carrying out referral based Oral Surgery. She successfully completed her Specialist Training in Oral Surgery at Glasgow Dental Hosptal in 2016.

Nicola has gained academic qualifications along the way, including Membership in Oral Surgery with the Royal College of Surgeons (2015), a Masters in Implant Dentistry with the University of Central Lancashire (2012) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry with Newcastle University (2015). She currently works as a Consultant/ Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Oral Surgery at the Edinburgh Dental Institute providing clinical care to patients and teaching trainees at all levels.

Nicola has a special interest in complex implantology cases and is recognised as a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). She is current Chair of the Women’s ITI UK and Ireland Section and has been co-director for the Glasgow ITI Study Club since 2017.

Within the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Nicola gained membership in 2006 and has recently been approved as a Fellow. She has been an examiner for the MFDS Part 2 since 2013, examining regularly both in the UK and internationally. She was appointed as co-convenor for the MFDS Part 1 examination in 2015 and has successfully overseen eight diets of the examination during her four year term. She has now been appointed as Director of Dental Examinations for a period of three years and is looking forward to the challenges that this role brings.

The papers should be read in advance of the course and will enhance your learning on the day. Completing this preparatory work will enable you to participate more fully in the case discussions that will be presented. During the live session there will be time to discuss cases and answer any questions.
