About the Role

This is an exciting entry level opportunity for someone looking to be in an interesting and fast paced role. You may be starting out in your career or already have an administrative background and looking for a change, but you should have an interest in the Criminal Justice Sector.You will be expected to work as part of a team to provide a first class service to your colleagues and service users such as, victims & witnesses and defence agents.    Whilst the role may vary from office to office, main duties will cover a range of administrative support and will generally include the administration of cases including:

  • Dealing with general enquiries relating to cases
  • Uploading and maintaining case information on internal IT systems
  • Assisting Legal staff in the administration and preparation of cases for court
  • Ensuring all witnesses are notified of their requirement to attend court
  • Ensuring the courts and defence agents have all relevant material prior to court hearings

Essential Criteria

  • The minimum entry qualifications are 5 National 5’s at grades A-C (including English) or equivalent; or demonstrable experience of general office work.

About the Role

These posts are working within the High Court Team.  The cases in the High court are the most serious cases that are dealt with in Scotland including murder and serious sexual offending.

Victim Information and Advice Officer

As a Victim Information and Advice Officer you will play a pivotal role within Scotland’s sole prosecution service. You will advise Victims, Witnesses and Bereaved next of kin in criminal proceedings calling in the High Court about the progress of cases, signposting them to support services and attend meetings with them. You will work closely with lawyers, police and other criminal justice partners to improve the efficient delivery of justice for local communities.

This is demanding role, requiring strong communication skills and personal resilience. Whilst there may be an opportunity to undertake a variety of duties within COPFS, the main function of the role is to support and guide Victims, Witnesses and Bereaved next of kin through the criminal process sensitively and appropriately.You will be responsible for both office-based duties including drafting legal notices and applications for Court within defined timescales and the supporting of bereaved relatives, victims and witnesses face to face at Court.

Whilst there may be an opportunity to undertake a variety of duties within COPFS, the function of this position is to provide support and guidance to Victims, Witnesses and Bereaved next of kin at the Court while ensuring the smooth running of the High Court through the Sitting Manager role.You will be required to work closely with Advocates Depute, Justiciary, Police and other agencies to orchestrate the calling and progress of cases.  You will be responsible for the communication of court outcomes to COPFS colleagues, liaise with witnesses to manage attendance, precognose witnesses as required, draft legal notices and applications for Court within defined timescales and support bereaved relatives, victims and witnesses face to face at Court,
You must be passionate about serving the public interest at all times; confident in taking decisions and be committed to meeting the diverse needs of victims and witnesses.

Essential Criteria Required

  • Literacy and fluency in English
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills with demonstrable experience of communicating with vulnerable individuals
  • Be an effective, strong team player with personal resilience to work with sensitive cases in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organisational skills including prioritisation of workload and sound judgement in reaching decisions
  • Good knowledge of IT software packages
Desirable Criteria 
  • An understanding of the work of COPFS and the criminal justice system in Scotland
  • Experience of working with bereaved families, victims and witnesses.

About the Team

Local Court Grampian, Highland & Islands is responsible for the preparation and prosecution of summary and Sheriff and Jury level business across all Sheriff Court and Justice of the Peace Courts in the Sheriffdom.

The Aberdeen summary team is led by a Principal Procurator Fiscal Depute, who manages a team of legal staff responsible for courts in Aberdeen, Peterhead and Banff.

The Inverness summary team is led by a Principal Procurator Fiscal Depute, who manages a team of legal staff primarily responsible for courts in Inverness, Elgin, Tain, Fort William and Portree but also occasionally required to attend other courts in Highland and the Islands.

About the Role 

As a Procurator Fiscal Depute you will play a key role in the criminal justice system.  You will take decisions on criminal proceedings, conduct courts and work closely with the police and other criminal justice partners to improve the efficient delivery of justice for local communities.

This is demanding role, acting in the public interest as one of the Lord Advocate’s local representatives, requiring common sense, good judgement and decision making, flexibility, legal and advocacy skills and a sound knowledge of the criminal law system in Scotland. Whilst there will be opportunities to undertake a variety of duties within COPFS, the main essence of the role is to mark cases, prepare and present cases effectively in court and deal sensitively and appropriately with victims and witnesses.

You must be passionate about serving the public interest at all times; confident in making complex decisions, based on independent assessment of all the available evidence; and enthusiastic about public service and meeting the needs of victims and witnesses.You will be placed in Aberdeen or Inverness initially, however, you may be relocated to another office within the mobility rules for career development and for absence cover. 

Role Specific Responsibilities, Activities and Duties  

Successful candidates will initially take up posts in the Aberdeen and Inverness summary teams, but there will be opportunities to work in other parts of the Grampian, Highland and Islands team in due course.  Generally, these posts are characterised by similar skill requirements and job weights as below:Non-Court Legal Duties

  • Ability to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of criminal law
Desirable Criteria

About the Proceeds of Crime and Serious and Organised Crime Unit 

The Proceeds of Crime Unit (POCU) is a multi-disciplinary operational unit of the Serious Casework Group function.  The aim of the criminal confiscation provisions of the Proceeds of Crime legislation is to allow the court, following upon a conviction, to make a confiscation order requiring an accused to pay a fixed sum of money reflecting the benefit obtained from either particular criminal conduct or, in appropriate cases, from a criminal lifestyle.

The Serious and Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) was established to ensure that COPFS can respond robustly to the threat posed by serious and organised crime and to reflect the priorities and the strategy set by the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce, which is co-chaired by the Lord Advocate and the Cabinet Secretary for Justice.

About the Role

The post-holder will be responsible for progression of their own case load whilst being flexible to the business needs of POCU and SOCUKey duties:

  • Analysis and review of financial information, together with supporting evidence, submitted by Law Enforcement Agencies in relation to both criminal investigations and Confiscation proceeds arising under Proceeds of Crime legislation
  • Examination of reports and other evidence submitted by defence solicitors and defence accountants.
  • Advising internal and external stakeholders on potential lines for further financial enquiries.
  • Providing advice and support to fellow professionals within the team/Crown Counsel in relation to internally and externally generated data and reports.
  • Attending court, as a witness in a professional capacity.

Training will be provided to support successful candidates.

Essential Criteria Required

As well as the competencies contained within the application pack:

  • Significant experience of financial investigation and/or significant investigative and analytical experience preferably gained in a law enforcement environment
  • Successful candidates will require to be security vetted to SC level
  • Literacy and fluency in English
  • Sound knowledge of IT software packages
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills with demonstrable experience of communicating at all levels verbally and in writing
  • Be an effective, strong team player and be aware of and recognise the needs and pressures of others
