Quarterly housing update

A summary of activity in new build housing and affordable housing in Scotland.

The Housing Statistics for Scotland Quarterly Update published in September 2021 includes an update on Affordable Housing Supply approvals, starts and completions up to June 2021. In addition it includes an update on all-sector new house building starts and completions to end September 2020 with more recent figures on social sector new builds to end December 2020. The publication also presents annual rates of new housebuilding and affordable housing supply per head of population, including comparisons to other UK countries.

Housing Statistics Annual Key Trends

Statistics on housing stock, new housing supply, local authority stock, and housing management.

Note that on 17th May 2021 a revision was made to the Stock by Tenure 2018 figures to correct the estimate for the number of Housing Association dwellings in the Shetland local authority area, due to an error in the original calculation of these figures.

Further details of these revisions are provided in the revised Stock by Tenure 2018 Excel tables.

In addition, Chart 6a, Chart 6b, Chart 7, Chart 8a and associated publication text in the Housing statistics 2019: Key Trends Summary have been corrected to match the revised figures in the Stock by Tenure 2018 Excel tables. This also includes a revision to the figures for the Orkney Islands in Chart 7 where a labelling error has also been corrected.

Private Sector Rent statistics

Information on Private Sector Rents across 18 Broad Rental Market areas in Scotland.

These statistics are largely based on market-level advertised new let rents and do not represent changes in rents for existing tenants.

Note that for the most recent publication, the Scotland figures have been calculated using a weighted stock approach based on separate Scottish Household Survey data on the profile of stock by area and property size over time. This differs to previous publications which have presented unweighted Scotland average figures.

This revision to the methodology is to help ensure that the national average figures presented better reflect changes to the underlying composition of private rental properties over time, and to minimise any effects of changes to sample numbers achieved for particular property sizes or areas in any given years.
