Who should apply
Child Disability Payment is currently only open to applications for children living in:
- Dundee City
- Perth and Kinross
- Western Isles
Applications for children living elsewhere in Scotland will open in Autumn 2021.
If you do not live in one of these areas, you can still apply to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children.
Any adult with parental rights and responsibilities can apply for Child Disability Payment on behalf of the child if the child:
- is under 16
- lives in one of the pilot areas listed above
If you do not have parental rights and responsibilities for the child
You can still apply, if the child is not living with a parent or guardian and you look after them.
If the child already gets Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children
You do not need to apply for Child Disability Payment. You’ll continue to get your Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
From Autumn 2021 cases will start to be transferred to Child Disability Payment and you’ll get your payments from Social Security Scotland instead.
This will be a straightforward transfer process and you’ll:
- be contacted before it happens
- not need to reapply
- not be reasessed
- be paid the same rate and amount on the same date
Until you're told that the transfer process is complete, you should continue to follow instructions given by the DWP to maintain your DLA for children award.
Find out more about the transfer process.
If the child is terminally ill
Anyone can submit a third party application for the child as long as they:
- tell the person with parental rights and responsibilities, or appointee if there is one, that they’re applying for them
- get consent from the child’s parent or appointee to do so
There is a problem
