Golf stars of the future

7 July 2016

Three promising young golfers were given the opportunity to play with one of Scotland’s leading players thanks to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

15-year-old Lauran Tennant from Nairn, Cameron Strachan, also 15, from Peterculter and 16-year-old Padraig Murray from Tain are all Scottish Golf Development Centre players who had part of their introduction to the game thanks to the ClubGolf programme.

And they had the opportunity to show off their talent to Richie Ramsay at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness.

The trio were selected by the First Minister to represent the Scottish Government and al played their part in helping the team to a second place finish, impressing Ramsay, a three-time winner on the European Tour, along the way.

Thanks Laura, Padraig and Cameron for the game today. Great kids, talent and plenty of birdies for the pro-am!!

The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open also played its part in promoting the Scottish Government’s Making Maths Count initiative, which encourages greater enthusiasm for maths amongst children.

They took a novel approach to the initiative, printing mathematical expressions, or sums, upon the 18 pin flags on course during one of the practice days.

Pupils from Ardersier and Balloch primary schools in Inverness came up with the expressions, which had Scotland’s top ranked player Russell Knox working on his own math skills! Inverness born Knox, the world number 27, said:

“This is a fantastic initiative and I was delighted to meet with the local school children who did a great job in preparing the expressions and almost catching us golfers out!”
