China: Day 4

11 April 2018

On her first day in Shanghai, the First Minister delivered the second keynote speech of her visit to China, telling a business audience at an Economist event that we can only sustain support for a dynamic and open economy if we do more to build a fair and inclusive society.

Following this, the First Minister met the Vice Mayor of Shanghai to discuss relations between Scotland and China’s largest city.

The First Minister witnessed the signing of an agreement between the Edinburgh International Festival and the Shanghai Festival for China’s leading choreographer, Yan Li Ping to bring a performance of the Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky to Edinburgh in 2019.

During a visit to online travel agency CTrip, which owns travel website Skyscanner, which was founded in Edinburgh, the First Minister met Jane Sun, the company’s CEO and one of China’s leading female businesswomen. They discussed the importance of equal opportunities for women in the world of business.

The First Minister said:

“I was delighted to meet with Jane Sun and her CTrip colleagues today for what was a fascinating exchange of ideas.

“While working in different environments, as women leaders we clearly share many common experiences – as well as a desire to see gender equality improved and to be role models to girls and young women.

“CTrip’s investment in Scotland is a great example of collaboration between Scotland and China in the key areas of tourism and the economy – and with a direct flight between Edinburgh and Beijing about to begin, this will only go from strength to strength.”
