FM in Aberdeen

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited Aberdeen in what was a busy day in the Granite City.

First up was an early broadcast interview as she appeared on BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Good Morning Scotland’ programme to talk about her upcoming day and other Scottish Government issues.

Then it was on to Aberdeen International Airport to outline details of a £20 million redevelopment of the terminal.

The airport’s owners said the programme would be the largest transformation since the current terminal first opened its doors in 1977.

The First Minister then headed to BP North Sea Headquarters to meet senior representatives, including Mark Thomas, North Sea Regional President, and Peter Mather, BP’s Vice President in Europe and Head of Country, UK.

Oil and gas is a key sector in the North East and they discussed BP’s plans for future production in the North Sea and how the firm is coping with the challenges facing the industry.

Dr Lena Wilson, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise and chair of Scotland’s Energy Jobs Taskforce was also there.

To help the sector, the First Minister announced £12 million for a Transition Training Fund which will help people who face losing their jobs in oil and gas to gain new skills and find new work. She also announced another £12.5 million for oil and gas firms to develop innovative technologies to help sustain growth and compete internationally.

The First Minister and Lena also chaired a meeting of the Energy Jobs Task Force.

Ms Sturgeon heard first-hand from Task Force members about the challenges that the industry is currently facing and the action that the Task Force is taking. They also met with Sir Ian Wood to talk about the North East economy.
