Key Findings
- As at the 23rd of January 2022, there have been a total of 12,823 deaths registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate. In week 3 there were 145 deaths involving COVID-19 (up by 10 on the previous week).
- Of deaths involving COVID-19 in the latest week:
- 78 were male, 67 were female.
- 16 deaths were aged under 65, 18 were aged 65-74 and there were 111 deaths in people aged 75 or over.
- Glasgow City (17 deaths), Fife (16 deaths) and North Lanarkshire (13 deaths) had the highest numbers of deaths at council level. In total, 28 (out of 32) council areas had at least one death last week.
- 91 deaths were in hospitals, 43 were in care homes, 9 were at home or in a non-institutional setting and there were 2 deaths in other institutions.
This weekly publication includes breakdowns by sex, age, health board, local authority and location of death. It also includes an analysis of excess deaths by location and broad cause of death.
In addition, we publish a comprehensive and detailed analysis of mortality on a monthly basis. This report includes analysis of deaths occurring in the previous month, and looks at age-standardised death rates, breakdown by deprivation, urban/rural, an analysis of leading causes of death and a breakdown by main pre-existing condition of those who died with COVID-19.
NRS mortality data (COVID-19 and excess deaths) will continue to be made available on a weekly basis through the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 dashboard.
