Return of External Assessment Material Requests

SQA provides a service to return non-examination material submitted to us for assessment for coursework due to be assessed for the 2022 examination diet. The following information will assist you while requesting SQA to return non examination materials submitted to us for assessment.

The closing date for requests is 30 September 2022. Any requests received after this date will incur an additional late charge. See Late Requests below.

Please note that the main change to the service in 2022 is that requests and payments will only be processed online.

Coursework marked from image (MFI)

Please note for coursework which are marked from image (MFI), only a printout of the scanned image of the original portfolio will be supplied.

Late Requests

The closing date for request forms is 30 September 2022. Any requests received after this date will incur a late charge per candidate, level and subject. Late requests will be accepted until 25 November 2022 when the returns procedure ends.

Each late request is £5.87, these are calculated per subject and per level. For 3D, the amount is £11.40 per subject and per level.

Appeals - return of evidence materials

If a post-certification review (appeal) is requested for any returnable materials, we are required to retain this work for 12 months after the final decision is made on grades awarded, you may receive a copy of materials.

Frequently asked questions:

Will I receive everything that I request?

Unfortunately, some materials cannot be returned. These include USBs/memory sticks and original packaging e.g. portfolio cases.

Is there a charge?

There is a charge for returning externally assessed materials. Each request is £3.91, these are calculated per subject and per level. For 3D, the amount is £7.60 per subject and per level.

When will I receive my materials?

SQA will dispatch your materials from Monday 24 October 2022, and they will arrive with you from 25 October 2022 onwards. SQA will only send requests to the address you have provided on your form.

What will happen if my materials are not requested for return?

Any unrequested work (non appeals) will be securely disposed of at the end of the current calendar year. If you don't want this to happen to materials, you should submit a return request by 30 September 2022. SQA will hold appeals material for one year, after which we will securely dispose of any unrequested appeals materials.

Will my examination scripts be returned?

No, SQA does not return examination scripts. An exemption to the right of access under Data Protection legislation also applies to examination scripts. This means that candidates do not have the right to copies of their answers to exam questions.

Other important information:

• Damaged items

  If your materials were damaged during transit to SQA, or during the assessment itself, we may not be able to return them. There is no compensation for any damaged folios.

• Packaging of materials

  If you submit a request to have your materials returned, SQA may not be able to do this in the original packaging. we do not accept requests to return packaging alone (for example portfolio cases). There is no compensation for any packaging materials that are not returned or damaged during the marking process.

• Materials submitted digitally

  Please note that for materials submitted digitally, SQA can only supply a printout of the scanned image of the original portfolio. Your school, college, or training provider may hold your original work.

• USBs/Memory Sticks

  USB sticks cannot be returned to candidates as they may hold materials for more than one candidate. Please contact your school, college, or training provider as they may hold a copy of your work.

• Refund policy

  If you wish to cancel or refund your Return of External Assessment Material Requests order, please contact return.materials@sqa.org.uk or call our Script Management Helpline on 0345 213 6612 (Option 2). Please note we cannot process a cancellation after the 25th of November 2022.
