ROLE OVERVIEW


This role will focus on the provision of contract compliance support, in health & safety and environmental management within our contracted ship repair facilities (Aberdeen, Ardmaleish - Isle of Bute, Birkenhead, Greenock and Leith). This newly created role is an exciting opportunity for a compliance management professional with hands on experience in any of the following high-risk environments: shipbuilding, or repair; heavy fabrication; oil & gas; or higher risk industrial facilities. 


Working at yard locations of our ship-repair suppliers, this role shall be responsible for monitoring service provision and ensuring legal compliance of health & safety and environmental management. These fundamental statutory obligations must be delivered under our ship maintenance and repair contracts. Your role shall support the compliance of services received, while working closely and proactively with yard site management and CalMac technical and contract management representatives. 


It is critical that our ship maintenance and repair contracts work in compliance with current legislation and best practice and that this role holder experience includes closely working with the following standards: 

•    ISO 14001 Environmental Management (essential) 
•    ISO 45001 - Occupational Health & Safety Management (essential) 
•    ISO 9001 Quality Management (desirable) 

 

 


FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES/KEY TASKS


•    Ensure all services provided meet, or exceed, relevant Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation - as required by our vessel maintenance and repair contracts 
•    Monitor the efficacy of supplier safety, environment management systems and process 
•    Identify and proactively raise any gaps, or deficiencies with yard suppliers, with a view to getting corrective actions in place to quickly rectify, or remedy, the issue 
•    Audit management systems, risk assessments and processes as required, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement 
•    Work proactively with yard site management; CalMac technical and contract management representatives, to seek rapid resolution and correction of any found deficiencies 
•    Support and encourage yard management towards a continuous improvement culture in compliance of health and safety and environmental regulations 
•    Report unsafe, high risk, or non-compliant conditions and issues, immediately with yard management and CalMac technical representatives 
•    Support CalMac onsite representatives with advice and recommendations on any areas of concern, or risk 
•    Monitor, manager and report safety Key Performance Indicators as required by the contract 
•    Provide periodic reports and management information on supplier safety performance and audits 
•    Provide coaching, facilitation and advice for onsite CalMac employees in Health and Safety and Environmental requirements 
•    Provide expertise and analysis to investigate supplier performance and disputes 
•    Any other duties within role-holders safe competence and experience as required by the Senior Manager - Technical Suppliers & Logistics. 

 


CalMac Safety Management 

•    Comply with and promote safety rules and procedures, challenge unsafe behaviour, and ensure all accidents or near misses are reported in line with the company's lifesaving rules 
•    Liaise with the HSQE department to effectively respond to vessel management meetings including on technical supplier issues raised via Safety Committee Meeting Minutes 
•    Ensure that all areas of responsibility are run in a safe, orderly and disciplined manner in accordance with the conditions of all Health & Safety requirements 
•    Work in a safe manner, seeking to minimise hazards to ensure the safety of other members of staff, contractors, and others and reporting all safety hazards 

 

CalMac Environmental Management 

•    Follow company Environmental Policies and Procedures to minimise environmental risk 
•    Ensure suppliers are honouring and delivering contractual environmental commitments 
•    Report environmental incidents and near misses as soon as practicable 
•    Identify opportunities for environmental improvement within your area of work, ensuring that it aligns with the goals of the Environmental Strategy 

 

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential

•    10 or more years' experience of health & safety, and/ or environmental compliance management within shipbuilding, or repair; heavy fabrication; oil & gas; or higher risk industrial settings. 
•    Significant experience in the effective working of the following standards: ISO 14001 Environmental Management; ISO 45001 - 
•    Appropriate recognized Health & Safety, Environment Management qualifications from a recognized body (e.g., NEBOSH diploma level and above, or equivalents) 
•     Strong MS office skills 

Desirable
Occupational Health & Safety Management; ISO 9001 Quality Management
