The Engineer role is to provide technical support and conduct the maintenance and repair of all the company equipment ashore and afloat relating to the Dunoon/Gourock Ferry Service, (DGFS). In addition, the Engineer role is also to act as the designated co-ordinator to the GDFS as nominated by the SSMOM during his absence.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Operations
• Ensure all requests for spare parts are inputted into CPS for the Assistant Technical Superintendent's attention.
• Ensuring that the necessary records and paperwork are completed accurately and timeously in accordance with the appropriate procedures and relevant work instructions.
• Liaise with boat master on a day to day basis regarding daily running of all machinery and planned maintenance
Technical
• Provide advice and guidance to the crew regarding all technical matters.
• In conjunction with the Technical Superintendents, assist with annual overhauls of their vessels. Completing work to the overhaul specification
Engineering
• Investigation and inspection of items carried out on board the vessel and a decision made by the Engineer as to whether a repair shall be carried out in-house or by a third party as agreed by the Assistant Technical Superintendent.
• Planned and unplanned maintenance
• Record all repair work in CPS.
- Ensure all necessary records and paperwork are recorded accordingly
• Carry out in service maintenance of diesel engines and associated mechanical Equipment:
• Planned and unplanned maintenance
- Covering of breakdowns on all machinery
- Carry out regular planned maintenance on main diesel engines/gear boxes and generators (750hrs service ME, 1000hrs service on gearbox, 100hrs, 300hrs and an annual service on generator engine)
- Carry out planned maintenance on FRC davit and winch to manufacturers spec and oil change on winch gearbox (annually)
- Regular cleaning and inspection of all seawater cooling pipes and valves
- Annual inspection of anchor windless and all electrical connections.
- Annual servicing/overhaul of emergency fire/bilge pump
- CJC filter maintenance every 6 months i.e., filter elements to change and float assembly to clean and inspect
- In conjunction with the TSM, identify opportunities for development and continuous improvement across all areas of services.
• Support in the weekly and 3 monthly maintenance of the spare FRC's
Personal Development
• Identify and propose relevant training opportunities with a view to developing personal knowledge and skills.
• Continually review feedback and plan and implement corrective action to ensure that exceptional service is consistently delivered.
Workshop & machinery
• Ordering and issuing goods and providing service in respect of the activities undertaken within the
workshop:
- Inspection & repair of items
- Vessel overhauls
- Machinery overhauls and survey
- Technical Assistance
- Measuring and test equipment
- Maintenance of workshop plant and machinery
Health & Safety
• Comply with and promote safety rules and procedures, challenge unsafe behaviour, and ensure all accidents, near misses are reported in line with the company's lifesaving rules.
• Ensure that all areas of responsibility are run in a safe, orderly and disciplined manner in accordance with the conditions of all Health & Safety requirements.
• Work in safe manner, seeking to minimise hazards to ensure the safety of other members of staff, Contractors etc and reporting all safety hazards.
• Review and update Risk Assessments and ensure understanding amongst staff.
Environmental / Waste Management
• Ensure that all environmental practices are implemented within the team.
• Ensure that the team is always compliant with environmental legislation, taking advice from the HSQE team as necessary.
• Ensure that environmental risk is managed by following all company procedures.
• Identify opportunities to further manage environmental risk through improvements to the company procedures.
• Report all environmental incidents and near misses as soon as practicable.
• Ensure that all environmental incident recommendations are completed in a timely manner, liaising withthe HSQE team as necessary.
• Ensure that you participate in Environmental Awareness training.
• Responsible for assisting with minimising waste arising within the team.
• Responsible for assisting with reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint within the team.
• Proactively identify opportunities for environmental improvement within the team, ensuring that it aligns with the goals of the Environmental Strategy.
• Proactively identify opportunities for environmental CSR that the team could participate in - i.e. Beach clean, tree planting, environmental charity collection, school talk, wildlife conservation etc.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Experience in maintenance engineering or small vessel support engineering
• Experience in maintenance and repairs of marine associated machinery
• Basic competency of electrical and welding skills
• Knowledge or experience of diesel engines such as Volvo and Perkins
• Able to demonstrate a high level of competence in all aspects of smaller vessel overhauls/dockings and projects
• Able to demonstrate an ability to foster close working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Able to organise personal workloads in response to priorities
• Able to demonstrate competent key board, administrative and good communication skills
