Introduction to the ELC Modules

You should start here if you are interested in enrolling in these Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) courses.

Module 1: Understanding the Social Factors which may Impact on Children's Outcomes in the Early Years

This module is part of a suite of free online continuous professional learning (CPL) modules to provide focused learning on key topics for early learning and childcare (ELC) professionals.


Module 2: Supporting Parents to Further Engage in their Child's Development

The module is designed to inspire confidence, develop new ideas and to instill a fresh outlook on supporting parents to further engage in their child's development. The module is aimed at everyone working with children in Early Learning and Childcare - childminders, support workers, practitioners, lead practitioners and teachers.

Module 3: Supporting the Development and Progression of Children's Early Language and Literacy

Welcome to the National Early Language and Literacy Resource for everyone working with children in ELC.  A range of recorded Webinars discussing topics of interest and input from learners are provided. We hope all of you will find some new information and useful ideas.


Module 4 - Developing an understanding of curriculum rationale

This module encourages you to reflect on your understanding of the term ‘curriculum’ and what it means within our Scottish early learning and childcare sector. We’ll consider our understanding of ‘curriculum’ in its widest sense and Scotland’s curriculum guidance for children aged 3-18 – Curriculum for Excellence.

Module 5 - Tracking and monitoring

This module is on tracking and monitoring of children’s learning to ensure continuity and progression, including during key transition stages.

Module 6: Building confidence in identifying and responding to additional support needs

As a practitioner it can be a challenging knowing when a child requires support, knowing when to intervene or not, or judging what the is ‘right’ amount of support to offer. This course is designed to help you develop confidence in your knowledge about practice and legislation, and also how to work with parents and other professionals to identify effective ways of providing additional support to children.

Module 7: National STEM CPL Module

The Early Years sector in Scotland is at a key point in its development, with high quality education and care at the heart of Early Years provision. Throughout the course of this module, you will be supported to develop skills, knowledge and confidence in delivering learning in STEM subjects in the Early Years.
