An important security issue has been brought to the attention of the WordPress team and we have worked diligently to bring you a new stable release that addresses it. Our latest version 2.0.2 contains several bugfixes and security fixes.
The problems addressed are unannounced XSS issues privately discovered and reported to the WordPress team. Thanks to Michael Boman, Mark Jaquith, Robert Deaton, and David House for assisting with this release.
Just a quick note: this is different than the snake-oil reports that went out on some security lists a few days ago. There were a couple, but they were either not actual security problems, too small to warrant a release, or just patently false. Remember: just because you read it on a mailing list doesn’t mean that it’s true. We’d be the first people to panic if there was an actual problem.
As always, when something serious crosses our desks we jump on it and get a well-tested release out as soon as possible.

[…] The reason this has all occured is because of a number of things, but it was the release of WordPress 2.0.2 that started it. Accidentally deleting the wp-config.php file, which tells WordPress where the database is and how to access it, was the first problem. Then there was me being too impatient to find out the correct db password, exporting the contents of the database, deleting the entire installation and finding out I had a problem putting the data back where it came from after creating a new WordPress install. Etc… I’m screwed. […]

Yes, I took the WordPress 2.0.1 plunge. It wasn’t a painless process, but it’s done. Checking the WP web site, I found they released version 2.0.2 yesterday, the security update. I’ll tackle that when I get back Sunday night from Oklahoma. As for themes, I decided to go with the Emire while adding some of the features of my old Letterhead theme. Emire is a very stylish theme but I’m also looking at Kiwi so don’t get used to this just yet. It’ll come down to a question of aesthetics, which one I enjoy looking at more. Col tempo s’e’ fatto blog. E Drupal risulta un po’ macchinoso per la gestione di un blog! E poi cosi’, perche’ m’andava di cambiare Drupal e’ adattissimo per la gestione di un blog multiutente, di una comunita’, di un sito di news, etc… Per un blog personale e’ un po’ troppo (sapete che pero’ lo usa anche uno degli inventori del WWW, Tim Berners Lee?). Come dicevo su, Drupal e’ avanti anni luce molte piattaforme PHP+MySQL per la gestione dei contenuti in fatto di sicurezza. E su questo voglio murmuliare qualcosa di male su WordPress: e’ di giusto una settimana fa l’annuncio dell’uscita di WordPress 2.0.2 che fissa alcuni buchi di sicurezza. Bene: di questi bugs non si sa niente. Per Drupal non sarebbe andata cosi’: innanzitutto quelli di WordPress hanno detto che chi ha scoperto le cose che non andavano le ha comunicate in privato al team di sviluppo. Se comunque questo fosse successo al team di Druapl, questi avrebbero resi noti sia i bug che le correzioni. ‘Sta cosa non mi fa star tanto sicuro devo dire la verita’… […]

Now we’ve upgraded WordPress to version 2.0.2 which is mainly a security release though a few other bugs were fixed. During this upgrade we also upgraded the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin to version 3.1. The plugin upgrade adds not only tagging suggestions from Tagyu but also Yahoo. Finally, I renabled the WordPress chaching, but of course once again I’m not seeing that much difference in performance due to the enabled chaching. I wish someone could point me to a good reference to how caching works in WordPress 2.x. Are there any negatives to doing all these changes in one night? Well, yes. If there is a significant boost or degradation in performance for this site…I won’t know if it was due to the chaching, WordPress upgrade, Ultimate Tag Warrior upgrade, or the Zend Optimizer! However, I don’t expect problems to develop (last famous words of an over-confident system administrator). […]

[…] The long foreseen WordPress 2.02 security upgrade is released. Much serious discussion and lots of pure ballony has stired up the WordPress forum and the WP mailing lists lately. Some have argued strongly that Matt comes to market with some assurances, just to calm users down and to stop the speculative attacks against WP, being unsecure. According to release notes there obviously were some issues, kept semi secret, which are resolved in the 2.02 release. I just upgraded using the normal upgrade route. I took a backup of the database using phpMyAdmin and also using Skippy’s backup plugin. I also copied the whole installation to my work station. Before uploading the new WP distribution, I deactivated all plugins. Without deleting anything in my installation, I uploaded everything in the new distribution, except the wp-content directory to my blog directory, and run the upgrade.php script from my browser. After that I activated the plugins I use, one by one. It all went well, an I was up and running within a few minutes. Hopefully, the complaints, rants and whispers will disappear from the WP forum and other more or less serious discussing areas. […]
