How do we do this?

We are a couple from Sweden who is traveling to Scotland for the first time. We have 9 days in scotland and we want to get the best out of them. We are thinking about going by train and bus. What would that cost? and which company is the best to by tickets for?
Our plan is to get up to the Highlands and see loads of history and publife and get some nice kilts! Where do we go? Which villages are the best and easiest to get to by train?
We would love to get to Islay and the whisky distilleries, how many days would you recommend you stay there? And the best way to get there?
Is there something you should watch out for? Tourist traps?

Hello! All great ideas for your trip.
There are so many options for getting around the country. If you're interested in covering a lot and want to learn about Scotland's culture, history and heritage, I'd highly recommend some of the smaller bus tour companies like Rabbie's and Highland Explorer. The great thing is you can relax and not worry about planning your travel to each region, attractions, your accommodation, etc. The tours generally depart from Edinburgh and Glasgow and range from 1 to 7 days. They even have island/distillery themed options, so there's loads to choose from. Hope you have a great time!
Alternatively, can anyone suggest the best train routes for them?1 -

Hi @Swedishviking!! If you are travelling on trains, ferries and buses it may be worthwhile looking at the Spirit of Scotland Travelpass. The pass covers travel across the whole of Scotland on trains, coaches, Caledonian MacBrayne ferries and some local buses. Some visitor attractions also offer discounts with the pass.

Travelinescotland is also a handy tool for working out individual prices of public transport in Scotland. Hope this helps!
