Soak in the view at Rogie Falls

Get up close to these impressive waterfalls on a new suspension bridge across the beautiful Black Water river. It's only a short walk from the car park and during August and September there's an excellent chance of seeing wild salmon leaping upstream. Visit after heavy rain or snow, when water gushes and tumbles from the slopes of Ben Wyvis, and the Falls of Rogie are even more sensational.

Life's essentials

During the summer months there are public toilets, run by Highland Council, next to the car park and food is available in Tarvie and Garve. You'll find other toilets, shops and places to eat in Strathpeffer, Contin and Dingwall.

Drop down through the woods to the viewpoint over the dramatic Falls of Rogie. Watch for salmon leaping on their way up the Black Water.

Riverside Trail

A longer walk through the woods and along the river, taking in the viewpoints at the falls and Raven’s Crag.

Rough gravel and earthy path. Includes narrow, rocky and muddy sections, as well as exposed tree roots. Steep slopes with some uneven rocky steps.

Fish in the forest

Rogie Falls is one of the best places in Scotland to watch wild salmon making their way upstream. They arrive here between July and September having already travelled incredible distances. Catch them when they've only a few miles to go – and a waterfall to climb! – before they reach their birthplaces and are able to lay their own eggs. The highlight of any visit is the dramatic new suspension bridge (built by Highland Council and perfectly placed for seeing the falls face-on) and new viewing areas on the other side of the river. So don't forget your camera!

You can take the Salmon Trail directly to the waterfalls and back, or join the longer Riverside Trail which follows the river upstream, before looping back towards the car park through pretty native woodland.

Cross the suspension bridge and explore miles of informal forest roads and paths all the way to Contin. This is a very large area of woodland popular with cyclists and walkers, accessible from either Contin or Rogie Falls. Include the Falls of Rogie for a fabulous day out on bike or foot, but remember to take a map as some of the trails are not waymarked.

How to get here

From Contin, take the A835 road west heading for Ullapool for about two miles. You will see the sign for the Rogie Falls car park on the east side of the road. The car park is at grid reference NH 442 585.

IV14 9EQ is the nearest postcode. It's on the A835 about a mile (1.6 km) before the car park if you are coming from Inverness.

There is a bus service to Contin, 2 ¼ miles (3.6 km) away.

Nearby places

There's lots to see in and do in this small area of Ross-shire. Head a few miles south for family forest trails in Contin and Blackmuir Wood, or north for a gorgeous riverside loop between Little Garve and Silverbridge and the start of the hillpath to Ben Wyvis. Heading west? Stop at Grudie picnic site or seek out peaceful Loch Achilty with its quiet oakwoods and lovely views.
