Stretch your legs at Grudie

This tiny picnic site is in quiet woodland beside the River Bran at the west end of Loch Luichart. It's a peaceful place to watch the river flowing by or to visit the Grudie oakwood by Loch a' Chuillin. Grudie is part of the Conon hydro-electric power scheme and there are many interesting engineering features nearby, including two 1950s power stations and a weir upriver from the car park.

Life's essentials

You'll find public toilets and places to eat in Achnasheen, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Grudie. There are also toilets at Rogie Falls (summer only) and a shop at Contin, 12 ½ miles (20 km) towards Inverness.

Bringing back the oaks

A little further west, Grudie oakwood drapes the hillside above Loch a'Chuilinn. It’s one of the most northerly oakwoods in Scotland, with a delightful mix of oak trees up to two hundred years old, hazel, birch, rowan and bird cherry.

How to get here

From Inverness, follow the A9 north to the Tore roundabout. Take the second exit onto the A835 (for Ullapool) and stay on this road for 18 miles (28.8 km). Then turn left onto the A832 towards Achnasheen and follow it for 5 ¾ miles (9.2 km). Immediately after the Grudie Bridge Power Station you'll see the car park on your left, at grid reference NH 310 622.

Public transport

The nearest railway station is Lochluichart 1½ miles (2.4 km) from the car park. Regular trains run between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh, and you'll find fares and times at Scotrail.

Nearby places

Visit the sensational Rogie Falls and explore the forest trails in Contin and Blackmuir Wood. If you're heading west for the hills there's access to some wonderful hill paths from Achnashellach and Craig.
