He won the Dundee West seat from Labour in the 2007 elections, and successfully retained the slightly enlarged Dundee City West seat with an increased majority of 6,405 (26.2%) in May 2011. He increased his majority to 8,828 in May 2016.
Attended Whitfield Primary School and Whitfield High School (both in Dundee).
Studied at Inverness College and Abertay University, Dundee.
Worked for Forestry Commission in Angus and in Argyle.
