Scottish Infection Prevention & Control Education Pathway (SIPCEP)
The Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Pathway is a staged pathway of infection prevention and control education available to all Scottish health and social care staff and students.
Purpose
The purpose of the pathway is to enable staff to continuously improve their knowledge and skills around infection prevention and control as part of their role. It comprises of 3 layers:
- Foundation - Underpins knowledge and core behaviour linked to Standard Infection Control precautions (SICPs). This layer is suitable for all dental staff and may be useful to include in the programme of induction for new staff
- Intermediate - Application of ‘knowledge into practice’. This layer has specific modules which may be relevant to interested dental staff e.g. Decontamination, Quality Improvement
- Improvement - Aimed at those who wish to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the principles of infection prevention and control (IPC). This layer is suitable for advanced practitioners in IPC
Foundation layer: Scottish Infection Prevention & Control Education Pathway (SIPCEP)
The foundation layer comprises of a series of stand-alone modules which provide a flexible pathway to learning, enabling learners to access a range of national HAI resources. It is based on current Standard Infection Control Precautions guidance .
What do you have to complete?
Individuals wishing to participate in the foundation layer are advised to check with their employer/line manager / tutor / course leader to determine which resources are appropriate and/or mandatory.
Staff do not have to complete all the resources in this layer.
Intermediate layer: Scottish Infection Prevention & Control Education Pathway (SIPCEP)
The intermediate layer comprises of another series of stand-alone modules.
The Decontamination of Reusable Medical Devices (local and endoscopy) eLearning course forms part of the intermediate layer.

Key Features:
The principles in the intermediate layer relate to the application of knowledge into practice and motivation of staff which will enable participants to:
- Enhance 'clinical’ or ‘practical’ skills.
- Reinforce decision making and clinical reasoning.
- Develop Interpersonal and leadership skills.
