5b. NHS Regulations and GDC Standards

In this module we will look at the GDC standards and the NHS (GDS)(Scotland) Regulations

Regulations Part One

Aim

In this module we will look at the GDC standards and the NHS (GDS)(Scotland) Regulations in a bit more depth.  The GDC Standards for the Dental Team sets out the standards of conduct, performance and ethics that govern you as a dental professional working in the UK.  In Scotland, the provision of General Dental Services is governed by the NHS (General Dental Services)(Scotland) Regulations 2010 which contain, as Schedule 1, the Terms of Service for dentists practising within the GDS.

A good working knowledge of both of these documents is important in everyday practice.  We will use clinical scenarios to illustrate the common ground between the principles in the GDC Standards and the ‘Terms of Service’ in the GDS Regulations and highlight their relevance to you as a dental practitioner.

Anticipated Learning Outcomes

1. Explain the NHS (GDS)(Scotland) Regulations 2010 and its Amendments

2. Discuss the principles and standards detailed in the GDC Standards for the Dental Team.

3. Apply the GDS Regulations and GDC Standards to everyday clinical practice.
