About Us
Wave Energy Scotland (WES) is driving the search for innovative solutions to the technical challenges facing the wave energy sector. Through our competitive procurement programme, we support a range of projects focused on the key systems and sub-systems of Wave Energy Converters. The aim is to produce reliable technology which will result in cost effective wave energy generation.
WES was formed in 2014 at the request of the Scottish Government and is a subsidiary of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The aim of WES is to ensure that Scotland maintains a leading role in the development of marine energy.
Through our work, we have funded 132 contracts, committed £50m and been involved with 300 separate organisations, across 18 different countries.

Shared floating wind and wave projects offer 12% combined LCOE reduction to UK
Sharing infrastructure, services and supply chain between wind and wave energy projects can reduce the wind Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) by up to 7% and the wave LCOE can decrease by up to 40%. The combined LCOE of a shared project can be up to 12% lower than separate projects.
WES recently commissioned research to understand and quantify the benefits of sharing infrastructure, supply chain and services between floating wind farms and wave energy developments. WES is now sharing the report produced by OWC Ltd. to start a cross-sector dialogue around this opportunity, through discussions and facilitated workshops with stakeholders in wind and wave.
EuropeWave pre-commercial procurement programme unveils 3 finalists
Three cutting-edge wave energy projects have been selected to fabricate, deploy and demonstrate their prototype designs in the third and final phase of the EuropeWave Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) programme. These projects will share a budget of €13.4 million to continue the development of their wave energy device concepts.
